Before importance, we need to know what is Mesh Network, how it works, and what its benefits or drawbacks are!

So Mesh networking is an innovative concept in data communication that uses wireless/wired technology to connect computing devices together. It is created by dividing a network into several networks and connecting them together through a wireless router or wired modem. This creates a decentralized network where every node on the network can communicate with every other node on the network. (node = computer) It is beneficial because it helps in increasing network connectivity, speed, and data security.

Mesh networking works by creating an internet where all the devices are connected to each other. Instead of having one main router, multiple routers are installed at various locations throughout the area being wired. This creates a peer-to-peer connection between all the devices without using a server. Anyone with a device compatible with mesh networking can join the network and get online. Additionally, devices can communicate without interfering with each other. For example, a baby’s device can communicate with the device of an elderly person without interfering with that person’s experience.

Now after reading you must have noticed that we’ve mentioned “Wired” and “Wireless” Mesh Networks above. So before using any topology we have to decide whether we have to go with Wired Mesh Network or Wireless Mesh Network.

Wired Mesh Network: Ideal Wired Mesh Network is used over short distances which allows Ethernet switches to be connected or Nodes to be connected easily. where Wireless Mesh Network: Ideal Wireless Network is used where the area to cover is very big. Generally connected over Wi-Fi with the nodes. The rest of the work of both the technologies is same and works pretty much the same way.

Now, Types of Mesh Topologies

Mainly these are separated into two main Topologies

  • Full Mesh
  • Partial Mesh

As the name suggests in Full Topology, each node is directly connected to every other node. This enables a message to be sent along many individual routes. but in Partial Mesh, not all nodes are connected directly to each other. A partial mesh, therefore, has fewer routes for a message to travel along than a full mesh but is simpler to implement.

Also, Wired mesh networks tend to be uncommon, mainly because connecting all nodes to all other nodes is expensive and impractical. However, wireless mesh networks are increasingly being used since it is far simpler and cheaper to connect using radio signals.

What are the Benefits and Drawbacks of Using a Mesh Network?

The benefits of using mesh networking include increased network security, error tolerance, and data accessibility. The connection is more stable because there is no single point of failure. Data accessibility is increased as more people can join the network, which helps with congestion and reduced data speeds. Additionally, mesh networking can be used for remote monitoring, machine-to-machine communication, and home automation applications.

There are several drawbacks as well to using mesh networking; including slow internet speeds due to increased congestion and security issues caused by unsecured connections. Some common problems associated with mesh networking include interference, system failure, data loss, and poor bandwidth allocation. To avoid these issues, users should carefully plan out their mesh network before installing equipment. They should also educate everyone using the network about computer etiquette so everyone has a safe experience online.
